Carnatic Music in Kerala during the Post-Swathi Thirunal Period: Developments and Continuities
Abstract
The history of Carnatic music in Kerala after Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma reflects a remarkable process of continuity and transformation. While Swathi Thirunal established Travancore as a major centre of classical music through his compositions and royal patronage, the subsequent period witnessed the preservation and expansion of this musical legacy through composers, performers, educational institutions, festivals, and cultural patronage. Although considerable scholarly attention has been devoted to Swathi Thirunal, the evolution of Kerala’s Carnatic tradition after his reign has received comparatively limited comprehensive study. This article examines the major developments that shaped Carnatic music in Kerala during the post-Swathi Thirunal period, with particular emphasis on the continuity of the Travancore musical heritage, the contributions of Kerala’s composers and musicians, the institutionalization of music education, and the role of festivals, broadcasting media, and cultural organizations in sustaining the tradition. The study argues that the post-Swathi Thirunal period was not merely an era of preserving an inherited musical legacy but a dynamic phase that transformed Kerala into one of the leading centres of Carnatic music in modern India through the successful integration of tradition, institutional support, and cultural innovation.
